According to Psychology Today, the neurotransmitters dopamine, endorphins and seratonin are released in our bodies when we smile, which are feel good substances. Tryout a smile right now and see how you feel. It's alright if you think you're faking it, you'll still feel a bit better. At times when I'm feeling down, I'll smile to help myself feel better and it really works! I feel lighter in my chest and an overall sense of well-being. In addition, when we smile, it can be contagious and create good feelings in those who see us smile.
I think Thich Nhat Hanh said it really well: "Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy."
